Midwifery

The midwifery programme is a 3½-year (210 ECTS) professional bachelor programme organized with alternating periods of theoretical and clinical teaching.

The activities of a midwife take place in the primary and secondary health sector. Focus is on the individual woman and family or groups of younger women, fathers/partners or families during pregnancy, birth and maternity.

50% of the programme is theoretical and 50% consists of practical training. The practical training takes place at hospitals in the southern region of Denmark, Fyn and a few hospitals at Sealand.

The theoretical part takes place at the West Jutland University College (UC Vest) and covers the areas of health, natural and social sciences, humanities, and interdisciplinary subjects.

The practical training is primarily at the labour ward and the primary consultation but there are also shorter periods at the maternity ward, the neonatal ward and gynaecological ward.

During the program it is possible to do internships abroad and se how midwifes work there. We hope soon to welcome exchange students for the theoretical and practical parts of the programme.

Danish midwives are not trained nurses. Nevertheless they work very independently after having finished the programme. As long as pregnancy, the delivery and the period of confinement progress without complications the midwife manages everything herself in accordance with the wishes and needs of the woman/the couple. If complications occur the midwife must consult and collaborate with a doctor.
